Cleveland Clinic
Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery
Cleveland, OH
Narrative
The Cleveland Clinic Department of Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery intends to recruit motivated candidates and train them to become academic leaders in the field of Thoracic Surgery. Our program utilizes an innovative, multidisciplinary approach that emphasizes academic knowledge, accomplishment, and clinical expertise in patient care. Our department is the busiest cardiac center in the country providing an exceptional opportunity for its residents to receive focused training in a wider variety of cardiothoracic surgery procedures. Our General Thoracic section performs in excess of 2000 surgeries per year providing robust experience for residents with open, laparoscopic, robotic and endoscopic procedures.
The first three years of the curriculum are designed to provide broad training in both surgical and medical specialties with a graduated level of responsibility and patient complexity. Rotations during the PGY 1- 3 years are one month in duration at select Cleveland Clinic hospitals, the Cleveland Louis B. Stokes VA Medical Center, and MetroHealth Medical Center.
The last three years of training are devoted to the surgical, percutaneous, and minimally invasive treatment of acquired and congenital cardiac disease, thoracic and esophageal disease, and vascular disease. Residents rotate each year with progressive responsibility through the Senior/Chief level. There is a three month block in the PGY 5-6 years for residents to choose an elective in adult cardiac, thoracic/esophageal surgery, or vascular/endovascular surgery amongst others. The rotation length is three months during the PGY 4-6 years.
With its rich variety of surgical cases and reputation for academic excellence, the Cleveland Clinic Department of Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery is best positioned to offer its residents a comprehensive patient care experience over a full spectrum of health problems related to cardiovascular and thoracic disorders requiring surgical intervention. In addition, we offer an exceptional opportunity for interested trainees to join a 2 year PhD program during their training.

University of California, San Diego Medical Center
Integrated Cardiothoracic Surgery
La Jolla, CA
Narrative
The I-6 Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency Program at the University of California, San Diego is designed to train individuals to become leaders in the discipline of cardiothoracic surgery. Our program strives to instill the knowledge, skills, clinical judgment, and attitudes necessary for graduates to excel as cardiothoracic surgeons. To accomplish these objectives, we combine a fundamental education in general surgery with adult and congenital cardiac and general thoracic surgery, with a rich exposure to clinical material. Our division is one of the busiest cardiac surgery centers on the west coast, providing an excellent breadth of operations that span coronary revascularization, structural heart disease, mechanical circulatory support, and heart/lung transplantation. We have one of the largest heart transplant programs in the United States. Our general thoracic surgery section performs in excess of 1000 operations per year, providing ample opportunity for training in open, robotic, endoscopic, and thoracoscopic procedures.
The first three years of the curriculum are designed to provide a strong training in general surgery, integrated with operative rotations in cardiac and thoracic surgery. Rotations in cardiac catheterization and advanced catheterization skills, intensive care unit medicine, cardiac anesthesia, and endoscopic thoracic procedures are also part of the curriculum in the first three years.
The final three years of training provide a concentrated focus on adult cardiac surgery, general thoracic surgery, and congenital cardiac surgery. Residents have the option to tailor their curricula to fit the specialty of their choosing. All residents have opportunities to engage in research either during training or as separate years research years, if desired.

University of Utah
Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery
Salt Lake City, UT
Narrative
The field of Cardiothoracic Surgery has changed dramatically over the last several years; including the introduction of new technologies such as endovascular interventions, percutaneous valves, minimally invasive surgery with and without robot assistance and modalities for advanced heart failure. With an aging population and an anticipated shrinking work force there will be an increased demand for well trained and specialized cardiothoracic surgeons in the near future. The goal of the integrated training program is to produce outstanding cardiothoracic surgeons by combining an intensive experience in cardiac and thoracic surgery with carefully selected experiences in general surgery, as well as related disciplines such as interventional pulmonology, interventional and diagnostic cardiology, and medical oncology to name a few. This change provides the opportunity to address the continued evolution of care in the treatment of increasingly complex cardiothoracic disease by modifying the traditional course of cardiothoracic surgical education. The curriculum preserves the significant contribution of general surgery and vascular surgery training to the development of well-rounded, clinically competent to cardiothoracic surgeon.
